My Mother and Dad, Rachel Ann Schwasinger and Neven Darwin Ickes, were married on Jan. 2, 1917 in Kearney, NE. Mom was 19, Dad was 22.
Mom wanted her wedding on Jan 1, but Grandma Marion Carpenter said, “No, that is ‘wash day’”, so they could not get married on the first. Mom’s dress was simply beautiful!
Dad arrived by horse and buggy in his elegant, stiff-collar white shirt and suit. He wore fancy sleeve holders as the shirt sleeves were too long and he wore spats on his shoes.
Mom was the envy of all the neighbors in their new neighborhood at Page, NE, because Dad gave her a piano for a wedding present.
Who could have imagined their life ahead …
